Trussville City Schools is governed by a five-member Board who are appointed by the City Council for five-year term. The Board meets in regular session at 6:00 pm on the third Monday of each month. The Board holds a Work Session at 4:30 pm prior the Board Meeting. Both Work Session and Board Meetings are open to the public. Board Meetings are held in the Board Room of the Central Office and Work Sessions are in the Training Room of the Central Office (113 North Chalkville Road). Special called meetings are scheduled as necessary and are publicized on the main system website. A listing of Board Meetings for the year can be found on the system website.
The board and the superintendent work together to assure the best interest of the community’s children and stakeholders of the district. Although this is a team concept, both the board and the superintendent have unique responsibilities. The board sets the policies and the priorities; the superintendent and staff carry out those policies and priorities. Board members act as a whole and not on an individual basis.
Protocol to address the Board
The Board encourages and welcomes citizens to attend all Board meetings and work sessions. Any concern or complaint about Board actions or operations may be addressed directly to the Board. Comments related to instruction, athletics, discipline, or learning materials are to be addressed at specific levels in the following order:
2. Principal/Athletic Director
3. Supervisior/Coordinator/Head of Department
5. Board of Education
It is the Board’s hope that most problems can be resolved at the school level.
HOW TO ADDRESS THE BOARD
To address the Board, please sign in on the Hearing of Delegations sign-in sheet found on the table as you enter the Board Room. You will be asked for your name, address, and subject of your comments to the Board. Comments will be limited to three minutes. All board meetings are recorded. Any complaint about school personnel will be investigated by the administration prior to any consideration or actions by the Board. Remarks should be professional and not personnel. If such remarks occur, the President or presiding officer of the Board shall proceed to terminate the citizen’s time on the agenda.
The board conducts public hearings on specific topics from time to time. These hearings provide additional opportunities for public comment on such items as the budget. Notices about public hearings are published on the system website.
In accordance with Alabama Sunshine Law, the board may meet privately in executive session to discuss good name and character or certain legal matters that are in compliance with Alabama law. Legal Counsel provides appropriate documentation necessary for the Board to enter Executive Session.
Board members are appointed to a 5 year term. They are volunteers who serve without pay. Trussville’s City Council appoints board members when a position is vacant. Interviews are coordinated through the City Hall. Board members serve staggered terms so there are always experienced members on the board.
Minutes of the Board Meetings are found on the system website following the meeting in which they are approved.
