 HTHS Summer Reading

Huskies READ

HTHS Summer 2008 Reading Selections

HTHS has instituted a summer reading program that requires all students to read one book for their grade level from the titles listed below.  During the first weeks of school, students will discuss this book in a group book discussion with a faculty member and will be given a multiple choice comprehension test administered by their English teacher.  Students will receive a test grade for this test.  Our goal is to provide our students the experience of sharing and discussing a common text while also providing the opportunity to read books that most interest them.  In an effort to promote reading as a pleasurable experience, we encourage family members to participate.  Hopefully, this approach will encourage lifelong pleasure reading as well as intellectual growth.  An extensive list of award-winning books has been chosen for their readability and for their relevance to teens and teen issues.  Be aware that some may confront controversial issues, explore adult situations, and contain strong language.  Titles marked with a symbol may contain subject matter and language that may not be suitable for sensitive readers.  A description for the symbols can be found at the end of the book selections. We encourage students to choose a book with their parents’ input.   A summary of each title for summer reading can be found on the private teacher page of Carolyn Horne or Donna Speegle.

All students are asked to read one book completely before the first day of school.  As you read you may want to do one or all of the following so that you will be prepared for questions when school starts.  Take notes.  Outline each chapter.  Underline important passages.  Do whatever works best for you, but read and enjoy!

 Author Day at HTHS Library

HTHS Library Sponsors Alan Gratz on Author Day

Author Alan Gratz discussed his books and his process as a writer during a visit to the HTHS library.  Mr. Gratz is the author of two books, Samurai Shortstop and Something Rotten.  Samurai Shortstop was chosen as a 2007 Top Ten Book for Teens by the American Library Association, and Something Rotten, a retelling of Shakespeare’s Hamlet, was released in October. Students learned about the writing process and what it means to be a professional writer.  Students who had read Samurai Shortstop discussed the book with the author while enjoying peanuts, popcorn, and drinks during the “7th Inning Stretch” seventh period.  Mr. Gratz was well received by both students and teachers for providing insight on becoming an author.
