Rachel Brockman > 2008 Newbery, Caldecott, and Geisel Awards Blog
Come discuss the possible contenders for the Newbery, Caldecott, and Geisel Awards!  (After the ALA announces them in January, let's dish about them here, too!)
Award Winners Announced!!!
The ALA announced the children's book awards today, and it did not dissappoint!!  (I believe those passing by the media center at 7:25 this morning would have heard a Woo-hoo, and seen misty tears in my eyes...)

A list of all of the winners is available on the American Library Association's site.  Here are the winners that I am most excited about:
  • The Invention of Hugo Cabret winning the Gold Caldecott medal - see my posts below...
  • Mo Willems getting another Caldecott nod with Knuffle Bunny, Too.  His art is unique - I love the mix of the black and white photo backgrounds with his animated characters.  I also love Trixie.
  • Mo Willems winning the Gold Geisel medal for There's a Bird on Your Head.  I didn't "get it" until I got to the very end.  An entertaining beginning reader that my students are going to love!
  • Carmen Deedy taking a Belpré for her Martina the Beautiful Cockroach: A Cuban Folktale.  Her storytelling is absolutely amazing, and I love that her work is being celebrated.  (Plus, I got to meet her last summer!)

So which award announcement made you cheer?  I know you have your favorites, too!

Ooooh - Forgot One!
Awards are being announced the day after tomorrow, and I forgot to mention one of my favorites!  Bow-Wow Bugs a Bug's illustrations are simple, eye-catching, fantastic!  I would love to see it get a Caldecott nod.

The Invention of Hugo Cabret...
Carol Ann and I were discussing this book this week.  Oh my gosh - if it does not get some sort of recognition either on the Caldecott OR Newbery front this year, I will have a fit!  So unique - this book is!  Half comic, half novel, half movie, half documentary (I know that equals up to 2 wholes, but that is really what you are GETTING with this book!)  Could easily take the Caldecott - Selznick's ink drawings are AMAZING.  Could easily take the Newbery - characterization in this book is wonderful.  I AM holding my breath...

New Awards to be Announced Jan 14th!!
Just checked ALA's website, and the 2008 book awards are to be announced on Monday, January 14th starting at 7:45 AM - Just under 2 weeks away! They are providing a free web-cast, first-come first-serve - here is the link:  http://www.unikron.com/clients/ala-webcast-2008/  Can't wait!!
Awards
Although I really enjoyed Bean Thirteen, if Brian Selznick's "The Invention of Hugo Cabret" doesn't win something, I will be very surprised.  This book has the whole package and then some more.  It takes you on an adventure.  Just amazing!

Glad to see my friends Mr. Putter and Tabby in the running
You just never can tell what these two will be up to.  This is a delightful choice that is a sure winner.  I can't wait to share this in the class.   It reminds me of the all the apple blinging.

Caldecott finalist
The Chicken Chasing Queen is by an Alabama author. It was one of the books we looked at for the Alabama Library Association Author Award for Children's Literature. A number of people on our committee really loved this book. I didn't like it very much but it is a popular book.

My Newbery Vote
I vote for the book Diary of a Wimpy kid, because it has a lot of humor in it.
