 Banned Books Week

Celebrate Your Freedom to Read!

Where the Sidewalk Ends     Where the Wild Things Are     The Lorax

Strega Nona           Just So Stories           Where's Waldo?

Each of the beloved children's titles shown above has been banned from a library's shelf at some point in time.  Books get removed from circulation for all kinds of crazy reasons.  The ones above?  Social commentary, magic, violence, a child's disobedience, and canibalism.  (See "Ladies First" in Where the Sidewalk Ends - a very funny poem.)

Celebrate your Freedom to Read and the diversity of human creativity during Banned Books Week, Sept. 27th - Oct. 4th.  For more information, visit Trussville Public Library, or go to the American Library Association's site at http://www.ala.org/ala/oif/bannedbooksweek/bannedbooksweek.cfm

Paine Primary Pick of the Week

  Old Bear

Kevin Henkes' new book is out, and his fans everywhere rejoice!  Old Bear tells the story of a cheerful, charasmatic, old bear who enjoys wonderful dreams of his youth while he hibernates.  A wonderful book to use when discussing seasons, Old Bear will provide opportunity to discuss memories, dreams, and growing old, as well.  The art in this new title reminds me of the simple, clean style used in his last book, A Good Day.
