My name is Miriam Vinson. I am extremely excited about starting a new school year with all of you! This is my eighth year at Hewitt-Trussville Middle School. I earned my M.S. in Secondary Education (English/Language Arts) from Samford University.
Keith and I have been married 38 years; we have two married daughters (both educators). We currently have two precious grandchildren (1 girl and 1 boy) and one on the way (baby girl due in October 2020). Family is very important to me.
Some of my favorite hobbies are spoiling my grandchildren, savoring good books, listening to good music, and traveling to new places (both near and far). Not much traveling in the year of Covid-19, though.
Seven years ago, I encouraged my students to create a summer bucket list. I made my own, too. As a result, I decided to try something new. My family and I enjoyed a three hour zipline tour in Asheville, NC. This was way out of my comfort zone. I'm glad I tried it! A few summers ago, my family and I were blessed to explore parts of Spain, France, Italy, and Malta over 11 days. I received a FitBit the night before our trip, and we logged over 67 miles of walking. Did I mention that I don't like to exercise? During the Summer of 2019, my husband and I spent two weeks exploring Alaska. I highly recommend this adventure to you! These special opportunities have helped me learn to like walking, and I was able to check off many things on the bucket list that I created seven years ago. As a result, I am going to encourage you to stretch your boundaries and try things you have never considered possible.
This year, we will be venturing to learn not only about English, but about ourselves and how we can apply what we learn in the classroom to our everyday lives. English may not be your favorite subject, but I hope that once we are through, you will have a deeper understanding and appreciation for all that it has to offer. Please know that my door is always open (VIRTUALLY) and never be afraid to ask questions. I look forward to meeting you, and GO HUSKIES!
"Education is not filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire." William Butler Yeats
"The more that you read, the more things you will know, the more that you learn, the more places you'll go." Dr. Seuss
"Around here, we don't look backwards for very long...We keep moving forward, opening up new doors and doing new things because we're curious...and curiosity keeps leading us down new paths." Walt Disney
Since I am a virtual English teacher for 2020-2021, the best way to reach me is through my email. (firstname.lastname@example.org)
I use Schoology for all announcements, assignments, and important information. Students will learn to find my Schoology spot during the first week of school.
I also use the Remind app for homework and testinging reminders throughout the year. Please make sure to sign up for this. I suggest that both parents and students should sign up when possible.
