Ms. Opal South

The 2018-19 school year will mark my second at HTMS, and I'm so excited to be returning to teach 7th Grade English Language Arts! I have worked in education since 2004 in both the private and public school realms. From 2004-2008, I taught Kindergarten through 3rd grade, consecutively, at Alabama Waldorf School in Birmingham. I also taught Music to 3rd-6th grade students. I went back to school for my MFA in Children's Literature, which I received from Hollins University in 2012. I worked in administration at Alabama Waldorf School from 2009 to 2015, and I also led Creative Writing workshops for faculty and middle school students. I realized how much I missed being in the classroom and wanted to bring my Waldorf experience into the public school realm, so I began my path toward teacher certification in 2015. During my schooling I worked part-time as an Interventionist for 5th and 6th grade students at Williams Intermediate School in Pell City. I graduated from UAB in May of 2017 with my Masters in Education, Secondary School English Language Arts.

Last year I started the school's current recycling program, and I'm looking forward to continuing as The Recycling Club sponsor in 2018-19!

  • I use Google Classroom for all class announcements and assignments. I use Remind for homework reminders throughout the year. Students and parents will receive codes to join these platforms at the beginning of the year.
