Dr. Ben Cook
My name is Ben Cook, and I am excited to be Hewitt-Trussville Middle School's new choir teacher. I have taught music in Alabama's public schools for eleven years. In the past, I have taught at Rudd Middle School, Vestavia Hills Elementary East, and--most recently--McAdory Middle and High Schools. During my tenure at McAdory, I established auditioned choirs at the middle and high school levels that earned performance invitations and accolades at numerous collegiate and professional venues. I also served as the musical director for the theatre program, where I collaborated with our theatre teachers on productions of "You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown," "In the Heights," and an original production for which I composed a score. At MMS, I represented the school at the Middle Grades Leadership Academy, hosted at Samford University. I am a recent past District Chairman of the Alabama Vocal Association.
I received my Bachelor of Music Education from the University of Montevallo (2006), my Master of Music Education from Samford University (2012), and my Ph.D. from the University of Alabama (2018). I am also a National Board Certified Teacher (2012). My areas of scholarship include music literacy, student motivation, and teacher identity development.
I am a native of Clay, AL, and I currently live in Trussville. My wife, Molly, teaches Spanish at Hewitt-Trussville High School. We will have been married for ten years this December. We have three children: Emma Kate (6), Hannah Grace (2 in October), and Sam (born this April). Emma Kate attends Magnolia Elementary School and is excited to start the first grade. We attend Cahaba Heights United Methodist Church, where I serve as music director.
